Biography
1904 Born, Rotterdam, Holland
1916 - 1925 Studied, Rotterdam Academy of Arts, Holland
1926 moved to the USA where he started working as a carpenter and house painter
1927 settled in New York City
1929 he met the artist and critic John D. Graham
met the painter Arshile Gorky, who became one of De Kooning's closest and most influential friends
1935 - 1937 De Kooning began to work on the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Federal Art Project
won the Logan Medal of the arts
1943 married artist, Elaine Marie Fried
1948 Instructor, Black Mountain College in North Carolina
1950 - 1951 Instructor, Yale School of Art
1964 moved permanently to his new atelier in East Hampton
1989 diagnozed as Alzheimer's disease
1992 Died, Long Island New York, age 92
