We at Sightlines mourn the recent passing of our friend Richard Mock.
Richard was a talented artist working well in a variety of media and inventing a few of his own. We recall his exhibitions of paintings at Brooke Alexander in the seventies in Soho, his axe handles exhibited at the Bronx Museum of Art, his “money lures” at Citibank in Red Hook, Brooklyn and then at an office tower on 45th St and the Avenue of Americas in midtown.
Of course, Richard exhibited his work, and participated in discussions of art and politics, from his birthplace in Long Beach, California, across the border to Mexico, and across Oklahoma and Texas and throughout the nation back to NYC where he made his home for many years. His widest audience came from his editorial cartoons published in the New York Times and by a newspaper syndicate. Richard Mock also participated in NYC public school art programs.
Richard Mock had vision, heart and a compassionate intelligence. He expressed himself verbally and with paint, ink, thread, metal and even ostrich egg. He will be missed and remembered. His uplifting spirit survives in his work.
