The Questroyal Mindset, written by Louis M. Salerno, Owner
In the most straightforward manner, resisting exaggeration at every period, comma, and colon: this is what we are truly about.
I own the paintings my gallery sells. Galleries that operate by selling consigned paintings do not agonize over what to acquire. Through my experience, first as a private collector, and secondly, an art dealer, I have learned that nothing hones connoisseurship as effectively as risking your own capital. This is what I have most in common with you: I understand what it feels like to make serious financial commitment, to doubt judgment and to deal with the pressures of salesmanship.
My staff and I will always be supportive and understanding of your position as a buyer. This means having patience and transparency, making sure that equal emphasis is placed on the negatives as well as the positives of each potential acquisition. In the end, what matters most and what helps us grow our business is earning your trust – something worth far more than any individual sale. This concept has been, and will always be, our highest priority.
The Gallery Experience: Why Visit?
We are excited to have clients visit. Drinks are served, the staff says hello, and there is a buzz about the gallery. Some galleries act as if the client is a distraction, but we have our priorities straight. Without you, we would be nothing more than a glorified warehouse in a high rent district.
We enjoy meeting with clients because we often learn as much from them as they do from us. Both new and experienced collectors have invaluable knowledge and opinions relating to the art market. Which artists are commanding collectors’ attention, what’s the mood of the market and which of our paintings have the most impact? Client interaction is very important to us on both a personal and professional level and it shows.
The Creative Deal
I always tell my clients that my most fundamental business strategy is to maintain sensible profit margins and offer paintings at competitive values. However, this only works if you, the client, agree with my assessment. Differences of opinion can stimulate vigorous conversation, and I encourage this. No question is unimportant, no offer is offensive, and every idea is worthy of consideration. There is no ego at work here. Let the games begin.
Innovation
We are always looking for original ways to interact with our clients. In an effort to do so, we have added a number of new features to our website (www.questroyalfineart.com). These highlights, included under the heading “Innovations,” are created for the purpose of promoting discussion between collectors. “Innovations” will include three sections: “Collector Interviews,” “Thoughts & Ideas” and “Satire.” “Collector Interviews” will allow informed collectors to share their experiences in a question and answer format. The text included in this section will be an extended version of that featured in The Collector’s Series segment, “The Collector’s Perspective.” “Thoughts & Ideas” will present a new take on client-gallery interactions; here, Questroyal will post topics and quotes related to art for clients to consider. The primary focus will be an interactive blog, where collectors can engage in conversations related to proposed subjects or anything else that may be on their minds.
Lastly, “Satire” will provide readers with a satirical article written for the sake of entertainment. Building upon rumors from the art world, these editorials are meant to make readers laugh and enjoy the lighter side of collecting art. As always, we will look forward to client responses and comments relating to any of these hardcopy or web publications.
Research and Publications
We buy and pursue quality paintings everyday. To do so, you need a staff that is among the very best, which can provide insightful and thorough research. At Questroyal, we understand the importance of sharing our insights with you whether they are favorable to a painting or not. Also, all questions related to price and quality are welcome as any staff member is happy to explain why one work is valued higher than another. We are here to provide you with quality research so that you can openly evaluate and assess a work, as well as our judgment.
Adding to our unique client-dealer relationships is our dedication to scholarship. In 2007 alone, Questroyal published a comprehensive analysis of the American art market in conjunction with two professors at New York University and worked with emerging scholars from one of the top doctoral programs in American art to produce Important American Paintings, Volume VIII. Recently, the gallery consulted with experienced collectors and industry professionals to begin our newest venture entitled, The Collector’s Series. This original series will discuss the finer points of beginning and maintaining a private collection. Each Questroyal publication is thoroughly researched, written, and printed expressly for our clients – past, present and future.
