THE PORTICO STORY
In 1981, Portico opened its doors in a beautiful 19th century townhouse on Portico Row in Philadelphia, where the juxtaposition of contemporary art in an historic environment was intended to elevate and enhance the experience of the viewer.
In 1985, Portico re-opened in New York, where it operates today as a private gallery and art consulting firm in a loft in the heart of SoHo.
With an expertise and emphasis on modernism and disciples of Kandinsky, Portico provides curatorial services to museums and private galleries. Portico also advises individuals on the development and growth of art collections that provide investment value as well as aesthetic and spiritual nourishment.
In 2005, Portico facilitated the sale of Rudolf Bauer’s estate in its entirety to the Weinstein Gallery in San Francisco, and in 2008 assisted in their production of an Emmy nominated documentary on the life of Rudolf Bauer and his relationship with Solomon R. Guggenheim entitled “Betrayal: The Life of Rudolf Bauer.” Portico continues to advise Weinstein Gallery in curatorial matters related to Bauer and their modernist program.
In 2009, Portico advised The Wendt Gallery in Laguna Beach, California, on the opening of Wendt Modern, and served as co-curator with gallery owner Serina Manqueros on the exhibition Champions of Modernism III. The show, which opened in May in the Wendt Gallery’s newly renovated gallery space, is accompanied by a 54 page, full color catalog.
Portico is also now curator to the The Marbrook Collection, which comprises the life work of Juanita [Rice] Marbrook Guccione and numerous works by her sister, I. Rice Pereira, from the mid-twentieth century.
