OK Harris was founded in 1969 in the SoHo District of Manhattan and its establishment here inspired the development of this district's fine arts character. There are presently over 150 galleries in the area.In its simple, capacious facility, the gallery is able to exhibit a broad spectrum of works in the visual arts. In this regard, the gallery functions much like a museum except that the gallery does not base its selection of exhibiting artists on fame or notoriety. During the course of a normal week, the gallery interviews up to fifty artist applicants, receives over thirty parcels of slides or photographs in the mail by artists seeking shows, and visits the studios of those it considers to have works worthy of close inspection. The gallery also mounts shows of antiques, collectibles, photographs and "documentation." It provides lectures to various student and fine arts organizations and invites dancers, poets and musicians to utilize its space for their special purpose. The gallery maintains a complete photograph archive on its exhibitions from the time of its inception which is available to students and scholars without reservation. The gallery's main concern is to show the most significant artwork of our time. In its choice of works to be exhibited it demonstrates no prejudice as to the style or materials employed. Its criteria demands innovation of concept and maturity of technique. It believes that its exhibitions over the years have proven the soundness of its judgement in identifying important artists and its pertinent contribution to the visual arts culture.
