For twenty years Janet Marqusee Fine Arts has been dedicated to the rediscovery of forgotten artists of the New Deal Era; many of whom were WPA mural and easel painters. Combining painstaking scholarship with imaginative exploration, the gallery has uncovered many artists who reflect this exciting historical epoch in a variety of distinctive styles.

Some were profoundly motivated by the social ferment of the Depression; others were committed to singing America's praises. Some were inspired by the loneliness and serenity of the land while others were stirred by the dynamism of industry and urban architecture. There were also a number of bold modernists wrestling with the formal complexities of color, line and composition.
