Nilufar is known today as one of Italy’s most active and original galleries in the fields of historical design and antique Oriental carpets and furniture. The gallery–housed in a three-storey space on Milan’s prestigious via della Spiga–was founded by Nina Yashar in 1979 and, since then, has presented exhibitions of an unmistakable style: always eclectic, and always to be read in novel, unexpected ways. Recently, during Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan Nilufar has confirmed itself as an active milieu with a site-specific installation by Martino Gamper containing historical design objects + Nilufar editions featuring Alessandro Mendini, Philippe Bestenhaider, Arik Levy, Caturegli & Formica, Barnaba Fornasetti and Andrea Salvetti + young European talents: Studio Glithero of Sarah van Gameren and Tim Simpson, as well as Julia Lohmann. Nilufar is going beyond the mere ratification of success created elsewhere and proposes itself as an incubator of tomorrow’s masters, of planners and designers who are able to contaminate the surrounding world with their enthusiasm and what they have to say, out of audacity, independence and contents.
