Moss has long been in the forefront of the movement to disappear the arbitrary and often false distinction drawn to separate Art from Design. Many of the artists whose production work we have shown for years also do extraordinary work in their studios which absolutely crosses over into the realm of collectible, historically pertinent art. We are committed to continuing this exploration and to bringing such work into view. In 2005 we opened a space called Moss Gallery the purpose of which was to bring attention to this work, by isolating it from the larger offering of the Moss store. Given the extraordinary activity in the marketplace surrounding this new category of "design/art", it’s clear that this isolation is no longer appropriate. Today the gallery space and the store are fully integrated. The "art" pieces stand beside the "production" work, and each amplifies and comments on the other, and together they tell a more complete and more complex story than either piece alone. We have stopped using the word "gallery" in isolation. The concept of gallery is now extant throughout Moss, both in New York and in Los Angeles, where we are now open on Melrose Avenue, and where we not only bridge the worlds of art and design but also fashion.
