Established in 2005, ROLLO Contemporary Art fast established itself as a serious force in the art world. Supporting emerging artists through to the well-established, both abstract and figurative, the gallery is not restricted on media or form, but is driven by a desire to exhibit contemporary art of the highest quality. ROLLO’s focus is to discover and promote art which is technically well made, aesthetically beautiful and also academically grounded, which contributes to the ever developing story of art.
The contrasting backgrounds of the two personalities behind ROLLO Contemporary Art account for its strong dynamic. With 25 years experience of building international collections and a background in Art Restoration Simon Gillespie brings a strong knowledge of collecting and an eye for artistic technique to the gallery. Equally Philippa Found’s academic background drives the gallery to seek out intellectually grounded art, which engages with art history and conceptual theories.
The gallery’s recent move from the grandiose residential setting of Compton Terrace, (the Georgian town house in Islington), to the shop and basement space in Fitzrovia (London W1) is symptomatic of the gallery’s strong belief in making contemporary art more accessible and less intimidating to be able to reach a wider audience.
Following ROLLO’s 2005 project, The Writer on Hampstead Heath, ROLLO also continues to organise outside projects to bring art into street level.
ROLLO Contemporary Art gallery supports the Alzheimer’s Society, donating a percentage of proceeds from all exhibition sales to the charity.
