The Hal Katzen Gallery, located at 459 Washington Street in the north edge of Tribeca in New York City, continues Mr. Katzen’s career as an art dealer for over 25 years. The emphasis of the gallery is to provide quality works of art by International Contemporary and Modern Masters. Hal Katzen’s love for works on paper has been his primary focus. He works with prints, and unique works on paper as well as paintings and sculpture. Both the new collector and the seasoned will find works of the highest quality. It is Mr. Katzen’s goal to help collectors meet their art needs by finding special works of art. Through a long history of working directly with collectors, Hal Katzen has been able to help create a complete collection, or find that special piece. The gallery works with individual and corporate collections in selling and locating works of art. Not bound to style or period, he has been able to help in the placement of major paintings and sculptures by many major artists.

Mr. Katzen’s involvement in art began at birth as the son of sculptor Lila Katzen. His exposure to art and artists of the period began early in life. Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and surrounded by many of the artists and their works from the decades that followed the Hofmann School, shaped his vision. Knowing important artists of that time and his personal relationships with them created a lasting impression of that period. Mr. Katzen graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. While attending college in the 70’s he found his love for the gallery world and has continued in it ever since. In the late 70’s, after moving to New York, he helped direct the Art Publishing company Tranworld Art and the the Alex Rosenberg Gallery. It was in the mid 80’s that Mr. Katzen opened his first gallery in SoHo. It was here he promoted a series of emerging and mid-career artists and continued in the sale of secondary works in the gallery. In the early 90’s he felt it important to work as a private dealer and operate privately from a more intimate space on West Broadway. Mr. Katzen was instrumental in the galleries that opened in the Meat Market District in Chelsae.
