Established in 1964, the Herbert Palmer Gallery exhibits work of master American, European and Asian artists. As Los Angeles' oldest Modern and Contemporary international gallery, it was an important catalyst in the California scene as it developed in the early 1960's. The gallery was the first to exhibit now well-known English artists such as David Hockney and Bridget Riley.
Other artists who have had important early exhibitions with Herbert Palmer include such innovators as John Cage, Claus Oldenburg and Christo.
Herbert Palmer, Director, is a graduate fellow in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Over the years he has arranged landmark exhibitions of Twentieth Century masters, lectured at universities and for civic groups, while contributing numerous articles to art journals. Mr. Palmer's specialty is Modern European and American art and he has a strong collecting interest in Twentieth Century Abstract American art. He has arranged one-man exhibitions by Bridget Riley, Allen Jones, George Grosz, Maillol, Abraham Walkowitz, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Gordon Onslow Ford, Lee Mullican, Vasa and Robert Longo.
Mr. Palmer holds a position on the Board of Directors of the Art Dealers Association of California, a nonprofit organization established in 1970 to help raise the level of knowledge and ethics in the art world.
Today, the gallery's focus is on the Twentieth Century Modernist and helping its clients to realize and build new collections.
