Established in New York in 1994, Bose Pacia was the first gallery in the West to specialize exclusively in contemporary art from South Asia. During the past decade, Bose Pacia has held over 60 exhibitions and is internationally regarded for promoting the South Asian avant-garde. Visual artists from both the Subcontinent and the South Asian diaspora work within a wholly unique space – one that is informed by a multitude of cultures, languages and religions and shaped by a complex past and dynamic present. Bose Pacia fosters an active discourse between these artists and the international art community by featuring exhibitions that contextualize South Asian contemporary art within its rich artistic traditions and current social tensions.
In 2003, Bose Pacia Gallery opened a new contemporary art space in New Delhi, India in partnership with Peter Nagy and Gallery Nature Morte (www.naturemorte.com) Since then, the two galleries have participated jointly in several international exhibitions and prestigious art fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, The Armory Show and FIAC Paris. Bose Pacia has recently opened a new gallery space in Kolkata, India. Bose Pacia, Kolkata opened in March, 2007 with the inaugural exhibition ‘At Half Mast’ with paintings and sculpture by the artist Probir Gupta.
Bose Pacia has also developed The Bose Pacia Contemporary Art of India publication series created to supplement the limited materials available to the public on contemporary South Asian art. The gallery has independently produced over 30 catalogs with essays by prominent art historians and curators. These catalogs have proven to be an excellent resource for documentation and scholarly criticism and are regularly distributed to curators, museums and universities worldwide.
In recent years, critics, curators and collectors alike have taken notice of the immense outpouring of South Asian artistic production occurring in such vital urban centers as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore as well as New York, Los Angeles and London. Many of the artists represented by Bose Pacia have exhibited at institutions such as the Tate Modern in London, the Reina Sofia, the Vienna Kunsthalle, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Walker Art Center and regularly feature in such prestigious events as Documenta and the Venice Biennale. As artists from South Asia continue to garner attention and establish themselves on an international platform, Bose Pacia will maintain its ongoing efforts to further awareness and understanding of art borne out of this region.
