The Kewenig Galerie, which was initially founded in 1986 as Jule Kewenig Galerie, was based in Haus Bitz in Frechen nearby Cologne. The Kewenig Galerie is now located in the centre of Cologne. An additional branch is based in Palma de Mallorca since 2004.
The main focus of its program is Modern Art since the 1960s. The artworks of international artists such as Marcel Broodthaers, Imi Knoebel, Bertrand Lavier, Giulio Paolini and Niele Toroni, deal conceptually with art and the artworld itself.
Further artists such as Christian Boltanski, Hanne Darboven, Jannis Kounellis and Ian Hamilton Finlay point out the issue of history, it's time lapse, it's contents and the social approach to it.
Nature in it's broader sense is the subject of the works of Arte Povera artists like Giovanni Anselmo, Mario Merz and Giuseppe Penone, as well as James Turrell or the sculptress Kirsten Ortwed.
Amongst the younger artists of the gallery are for instance Kimsooja, who follows traces of time with the help of digital media, the painter Bert de Beul as well as Ivan Bazak, who deals with social phenomenons in his paintings, video works and objects.
