In 1963 Bruno Bischofberger opens his first gallery in Zurich.
From 1965 the gallery shows American Pop Art by Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselman. In 1968 Warhol grants Bischofberger a right of first refusal on all his art work. In 1969 Bischofberger co-founds Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, and 1970 Bischofberger produces Warhol’s film, L’Amour. Bischofberger commissions several series of work from Warhol, including Maos in 1971, Children Paintings in 1982 and Collaboration Paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Andy Warhol in 1984.
In 1966 Galerie Bischofberger is the first to show the work of Gerhard Richter outside Germany.
In the late sixties and early seventies the gallery shows Nouveau Réalisme artists such as Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely. Bischofberger goes on to publish Tinguely’s Catalogue Raisonné.
In the seventies Galerie Bischofberger puts on a series of one-man exhibitions and installations of Minimal and Conceptual artists including Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Sol Lewitt and Bruce Nauman, among others. At the same time the gallery starts to deal in the work of modern masters such as Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger and Pablo Picasso.
From 1979 Galerie Bischofberger starts showing work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Miquel Barceló, Mike Bidlo, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Enzo Cucchi, Peter Halley, David Salle and Julian Schnabel. In 1982 Galerie Bischofberger starts to represent Basquiat exclusively. The gallery publishes books on these artists and organizes Museum retrospectives and other large exhibitions for them. The renowned architect and designer, Ettore Sottsass is now also represented by the gallery.
In 1997 British artist Damien Hirst has a one-man exhibition at Galerie Bischofberger.
