David Zwirner is pleased to announce that he will open a new gallery in Chelsea in early 2010 on the ground floor of Shigeru Bans unique structure, Metal Shutter Houses, at 524 West 19th Street. The new gallery will be the first public space in America designed by the renowned Japanese architect and will feature expansive exhibition spaces and an abundance of natural light.

The gallery, which will also be called David Zwirner, will continue the activities of Zwirner & Wirth under the directorship of Kristine Bell.

David Zwirner at 524 West 19th Street will expand upon the exhibition program that was developed at Zwirner & Wirth, a gallery located on the Upper East Side (32 East 69th Street) that had been jointly operated by David Zwirner and Iwan Wirth since 2000. The nine-year collaboration yielded a series of extraordinary, critically acclaimed exhibitions, including Gerhard Richter: Early Paintings (2000); Bruce Nauman (2001); Martin Kippenberger (2002); Cy Twombly: Letter of Resignation (2002/2003); Fred Sandback (2004, 2006/2007, and 2009); Marlene Dumas (2005); Claes Oldenburg: Early Work (2005); David Hammons (2006); Joseph Beuys: Sculpture and Drawing (2007); and Dan Flavin: the 1964 Green Gallery exhibition (2008).

David Zwirner at 524 West 19th Street will continue to focus on private sales in the secondary market and will present historically researched exhibitions and publications devoted to the work of modern and contemporary masters. The gallery will represent the Estates of Dan Flavin, Fred Sandback and Al Taylor.

Though David Zwirner and Iwan Wirth, whose respective galleries have continuously grown over the years, will no longer operate a physical gallery space together in New York, they will maintain and expand their strategic partnership focusing on acquisitions and collections management. In addition, the two gallerists are planning a series of exhibitions together. In early 2010, an exhibition of Los Angeles-based artists of the 1960s and 70s is scheduled, with work drawn from the Helga and Walther Lauffs Collection. David Zwirner and Iwan Wirth are also looking forward to the publication of Zwirner & Wirth: Ten Years, which will document the history of the gallery and the exhibitions the two gallerists have organized together over the past decade. Co-published by Steidl, the catalogue will be available in February 2010.

The new David Zwirner gallery, with 5,000 square feet of gallery space, will be ideally situated directly across the street from David Zwirners existing locations at 519, 525, and 533 West 19th Street. This proximity will enable the gallery to pursue more ambitious, large-scale exhibitions, further developing the model of the recent two-venue presentations (at David Zwirner and Zwirner & Wirth) of work from the Helga and Walther Lauffs Collection and exhibitions of the work of Fred Sandback and Alice Neel.

The Shigeru Ban-designed gallery is located in one of New Yorks premier destinations for architecture: steps away from the High Line, the Frank Gehry-designed IAC headquarters, Annabelle Selldorfs 520 West Chelsea residence, and Jean Nouvels anticipated 100 11th building.
