Giovanni Battista Piranesi
May 7 to June 30, 2009

David Tunick has put aside superb examples of prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi for more than two decades in preparation for a major exhibition. Now mounted at the firm’s premises, the exhibition comprises the largest and most comprehensive show of the artist’s etchings in New York in more than 25 years. The exhibition spans Piranesi’s career from his earliest work - complete sets of the Antichità Romane della Repubblica and the Prima Parte, from the 1740’s, and examples of the imaginary Prison series, the Carceri, in first and second states - to prime views from the famous Vedute di Roma, including many first states and one unpublished state, and to his more mature work, such as the Greek temples at Paestum (1778). The sets also include the very rare Magnificenze di Roma, in the first issue of 1751, an unpublished volume in original boards in an eighteenth century tooled leather binding containing 34 views of Rome. One of only four intact sets recorded, this is the last known set in private hands. There are also three sets from 1762 bound together in original soft covers, including Antichità d’Albano e di Castel Gandolfo, commissioned by Pope Clement XIII and containing 54 etchings with descriptive text.
