The owner of the company, Gene Shapiro, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and was raised in the United States. He is a bilingual English and Russian speaker, and also maintains fluency in French and Spanish. Gene studied art history at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., Art History, summa cum laude), and Christie’s Education (RSA Certificate, London) before starting his career at Sotheby’s auction house in New York. He is also a graduate of the Hotchkiss School. Gene's additional work experience included working for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy, and working for several commercial galleries including Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York, before branching out as a private dealer. In 2007, with a a variety of art-world experiences under his belt, and more importantly experience handling thousands of of art objects, Gene decided that the auction house business was still his passion, and proceeded to open Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC in 2007.
In addition to auctions, Gene is frequently called upon by collectors, dealers, and governmental organizations for consultations and appraisals of art, and has lectured on the art market and Russian art. Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC is committed to supporting charitable causes and regularly provides auctioneering for charitable organizations. Recent events for which Gene has donated his services include the St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center Charity Fundraiser, and the Celiac Benefit Gala for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.
