George Faulkner Wetherbee Biography
Born in Cincinnati and educated in Boston, Wetherbee would find his artistic niche overseas, becoming a successful painter in late Victorian London. He left America as a young man to study art in Antwerp and at the Royal Academy Schools in London. During his early years he traveled extensively, visiting and living in many countries, including France, Germany, Italy and even the West Indies before settling permanently in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880 as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists, the New Watercolour Society, the Grovesnor Gallery and the New Gallery. A major exhibition of his work was held at the Fine Art Society on fashionable Bond Street in 1903. His work is inspired by French Social Realism, which in the second half of the nineteenth century, exerted a strong influence on British art. His depictions of peasants and the poor are imbued with a solemn beauty.
