“Minter hones in (literally and figuratively) on the imperfect trappings of high couture in large-scale color photographs and paintings that at once magnify, fetishize, and abject their subjects. The wearer of studded Christian Dior pumps has apparently been doused in mud, and dirt infiltrates every crease of her perfectly manicured feet. The ambivalence in Minter’s works does not leave us any less seduced by them: we simply have a harder time cleaning up and simplifying the true nature of our much more complicated desires.”
-2006 Whitney Biennial Catalogue

Marilyn Minter (b. 1948) renders beauty grotesque and gore beautiful with photographs and photo-realistic paintings. The phrase "dirty realism", popularized by a 1983 issue of the magazine Granta, comes to mind when looking at Minter’s work. Not since the Baroque when Caravaggio painted his models with mud and grime on their feet and dirt under their finger nails has filth been so evocative. Four hundred years later, Minter has done the same with her dazzling photographs. Minter has had solo exhibitions at Salon 94 (2006 & 2009) and the San Francesco MoMA (2005). In 2006, she was featured in the Whitney Biennial. In 2007, she envisioned a centerfold for collaboration with Parkett magazine. Upcoming projects include: a solo exhibition at Regen Projects in fall 2009. In September, both the Zaha Hadid designed Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati and the newly opened contemporary art space ‘La Conservera’ in Murcia, Spain will present installations of Minter's work.

Art Market Data

Historical Auction Records
  • More About this Chart
    • The Historical Auction Records Chart shows the price development of works similar to the lot on sale. The comparable works are chosen from the artnet Price Database by our experienced specialists and art historians.

The data is culled from the artnet Price Database, which has collected auction sales results for over twenty years.

Prices are stated in USD in order to facilitate comparison and analysis of the market reports. When sales took place in another currency, the conversion of that amount into USD was done on the basis of the average conversion rate applicable on the day of the sale.

Although most auction houses these days report transactions in prices that include a buyer’s premium, some auction houses report only the hammer price. Based on an analysis of historical auction catalogs, we apply a formula to all records with hammer prices to estimate the effect of a buyer’s premium. All prices used in the charts are either reported in or equated to hammer price plus buyer’s premium.

To be included in artnet’s peer groups, artists need to have sold either at least 10 lots at USD 10,000 or more, or at least 40 lots at USD 5,000 or more, or at least 3 lots each year since 2006 of which at least 2 were sold over USD 5,000. Our Photography art peer group consists of 445 artists. For 2009, the data included in the calculations is current through the 15th of June. The charts will be updated every three months.
